Writing for drumline?
These are your people.
Writing music for drumline is weirdly solitary.
You sit at your laptop, layer sounds and notes, and hope the tenors don’t revolt when they see your split.
If you’re lucky, you have a couple people to bounce ideas off.
But most of us don’t. Most of us are just guessing—and doing it alone.
The Problem: No Real Community Exists
There are a ton of groups online for band directors, gearheads, even reed players.
But nothing for us—the people actually writing this stuff.
No central place to ask “Hey, is this playable?” or “How do you teach rolls in 7th grade?”
So unless you already have a tight network, you’re stuck writing in a vacuum.
The Spark: Why I Started a Group
I used to belong to some great Facebook groups in other industries—tight-knit places where people helped each other out, gave real feedback, and grew together.
That’s the kind of space I wanted to build for the drumline and marching percussion community.
So I made one.
What It Is—and Isn’t
It’s called Writing Music for Drumline & Marching Percussion.
Battery, pit, winter percussion, small ensembles—whatever you write, you’re welcome.
This is not a place to sell your charts or dunk on new writers.
It’s a come-as-you-are, judgment-free zone built for feedback, inspiration, and growth.
The Vision: What We’re Building
The goal is simple: a place where someone brand new can post a sketch and say “Thoughts?” and get thoughtful answers.
A place where you can expand your view beyond your own ensemble and see what’s working in other regions, other styles, other programs.
Writing in a silo doesn’t make anyone better. Learning from each other does.
Invitation: Help us build it!
Right now, the group is quiet. But that’s why I’m inviting you.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, or unsure, or like you were the only one doing this work—join us.
It’s free. It’s friendly. And it only works if people like you are part of it.
